The Department of Urology covers the complete spectrum of urology in clinic and research. As a DKG certified prostate cancer center imaging of prostate cancer is essential and decisions on diagnostics, treatment and follow-up are based on this imaging. MRI-US-Fusion-Biopsy has been introduced some years ago and is a focus of research and being evaluated for prostate cancer detection, High-Intensified-Focal-Ultrasound (HIFU) treatment and in the context of Active Surveillance. Prof. H. Thoeny from the Department of Radiology, an expert in prostate MRI, and Dr. S. Boxler from the Department of Urology, trained in prostate MRI and HIFU, are involved in these studies.
A further focus of interest together with the multidisciplinary imaging laboratory SCAN (Prof. R. Wiest) focusses on the study of physiological processes such as pain processing in chronic pelvic pain and in relation to different treatment modalities as well as libido and seminal vesicle filling pre/ post ejaculatory. A better understanding of the pain processing may allow to improve treatment in this often treatment resistant disease.
